An untraditional Thanksgiving

Amigos de Jesus celebrated Thanksgiving a week early and opted not to go with the traditional Thanksgiving turkey, cranberries, candied yams, or even stuffing! Instead, the youth group from Annunciation substituted savory enchiladas, arroz, two kinds of pasta salad, as well as chocolate horchata. Of course, not all of the fare was forsaken. The youth group enjoyed several varieties of pie and cake with a plentiful scoop of ice cream.

The evening began with prayer, recalling the many ways in which God had blessed the community, their friends and families over the last year. Afterward, a great space of time was given to the delicious dinner and friendly conversation. Following the meal, Br. Joseph spoke to the youth of the origin and meaning of Thanksgiving, as well as its early roots among the Spanish explorers and the Franciscan missionaries who accompanied them. Afterward, Brother recounted briefly the life of Chiara Luce Badano, whose life of heroic virtue ended at 18 years and whose cause for canonization is now being presented to Rome.
