Two important concepts for understanding sin:

Original Sin: the sin of Adam and Eve by which they broke friendship with God. As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin. Every person is born with this wounded human nature as a result of Original Sin. (Also called "The Fall").

Personal Sin: an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience in acting or in failing to act (omission); it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor. It wounds the nature of man and injures human unity. There are two types of personal sin: venial and mortal.
